Trivia & Tidbits

Our Chilean wine dinner features wines from the Casillero del Diablo vineyards which are a part of the Concha y Toro winery. Do you know the meaning or legend of Casillero del Diablo? It is a very famous legend in Chile.

The best wine bottles were kept in a locked cellar... When some of those bottles were stolen, probably by local workers, Don Melchor (the owner) spread a rumor that his cellar was kept by the Devil. In fact, the word is that the wily nobleman even had a tunnel built from his mansion, so he could walk the cellars, clad in a long black cloak, keeping an eye on things and giving credence to the rumor. The legends went on for years, so when that wonderful secret wine was actually discovered, they named it "Casillero del Diablo".
